Seedling English Walnut

(Juglans regia) -Full to Part Sun–  Upright shape, Height 40-60′ Russian seed source

Russian seed source that should have better productivity over the more common Polish seed source.  These are seedlings that have good cold hardiness.  While not quite as large as grafted varieties, they come pretty close and are easy to grow.  More upright growth than heartnut with beautiful smooth white bark!  Can sometimes have pest issues on the nuts but often have plenty of unharmed nuts to supply your winter pantry.  Full to part sun; Zone 4-8.   Height 30-40’

Hybrid Hazelnut

Corylus spp. hybrids -Full Sun to part Shade–  edible ornamental, 8-12′ tall, plant 5 for pollination, 5-10′ apart, blight resistant, medium-large nut size

This is the European hazel that you recognize from store-bought hazelnuts.  Shrubby growth gets 8-12’ tall with 6-8′ spread.       Fall foliage is stunning with colors all over the spectrum.       Showy male catkins in the winter and spring.    Parent is resistant Eastern Filbert Blight so seedlings should have good resistance but not guaranteed.    Plant two, ideally three or more for pollination.    Can take half-day to full sun.    Space 4-8’ apart.

Yellow Groove Bamboo

(Phyllostachys aureosulcata) -Full Sun to part shade–  Tall, running, edible shoots, up to 2″ diameter

An attractive green bamboo with a yellow groove. A small percentage of canes display a unique zig zag growth pattern. In optimal conditions it can reach a height of up to 35 ft, with a culm diameter of 2.25 inches diameter. Our grove (in poor soil but with ample moisture) maintained about a 1″ diameter for the first 8 years, and now at 14 years we have a few canes approaching 2″ diameter. “Running” bamboo is invasive. Plant in an area that you can mow at least a 6′ wide path around, bury 2′ deep dividers to block runners, or just plan on keeping shoots snapped off on a regular basis where you don’t want it to spread. Tender new shoots are edible, and easy to pick.

(Cudrania tricuspidata) -Full Sun to Part Shade–  semi-dwarf on Osage Orange Rootstock, space 14′ apart, self fertile

Grafted. Che is also known as Chinese Melon Berry, and tastes like a cross between a fig and a watermelon.  The variety we carry is seedless and completely self-fertile.  If planted near a male Che it will have hard seeds.  Strikingly different and beautiful small trees with attractive clean foliage.  They turn extra eye-catching when loaded with ripe pink-red fruits in the fall.  Fruits are about 1″ diameter, good chewy texture, keep well on the tree.  Fruits resemble a small hedge apple (osage orange), which they are related to.  Somewhat slow growing up to 15′ tall.  Grafted on osage orange rootstock.  zones 6-9

Carmine Jewel Sour Cherry

-Full Sun to Part Shade–  Bush form 6-8′ tall, space 5′-7′ apart, self fertile

August.  (dark red flesh and juice)  We are VERY excited about this newer offering.  It is a natural (non-GMO) hybrid cross between sour cherries and bush cherries, which gives it a very manageable size (6-8′ tall) and great disease and insect resistance. AND it is SWEET – great for fresh eating.  Very productive.  Fruit keeps well on the bush, provided you protect it from birds and neighborhood kids :).  Best flavor is reached a few weeks after the fruits turn red – they’re not really ripe until they are dark red-black.  Self fertile

These seedlings are every bit as ornamental as the ‘Julian’ grafted variety but the fruit will not be quite as large or as tasty.  One advantage of seedlings is they each have nice subtle fall color differences–from pinks to yellow/orange to bluish purples.

Sam Sweet Cherry

-Full Sun to Part Shade–  Semi-Dwarf on Krymsk 5, space 12′-16′ apart, needs pollinator

Early season (early July).   Very dark, almost black fruit with a deeper flavor than other sweet cherries.   Blooms late.   Resistant to cracking and bacterial canker.   Zone 5-9

Gallon* pots $24, 2-gallon* pots $36, 4-gallon* pots $48

While sweet cherries are savored by everyone for their meaty, rich and juicy flesh, they are more difficult to grow without synthetic sprays than sour cherries. The fruit is prone to brown rot, often starting on split fruits. Insect pests (and birds) are also drawn to the fruitlets. Sweet cherries in southern IN sometimes miss a crop from blooming too early and having the blossoms killed by heavy frost. Still, they are somewhat easier than apples and plums, similar in ease of growing to peaches. We have sought varieties and rootstocks that will give you the best chance of success in our region. Grafted on Krymsk 5 which is a vigorous, early bearing, semi-dwarfing rootstock for cherries. It performs incredibly well in poor, heavy clay soils and can be kept at 12-15’ for easier picking! Space sweet cherries 15’ apart. gallon pot* $16 +tax
