(Prunus Americana) -Full Sun– Full size on own roots (not grafted), plant two for pollination. disease resistant
These seedling trees are extremely disease-resistant and set bumper crops of golf-ball sized fruit every two years. In between years get a smaller crop. The fruit is red-skinned and yellow fleshed and glows when the sunlight hits it! It is delicious eaten straight off the tree with a slight astringency that comes through delightfully in wine made from these fruits. The roots will sucker so if you do not mow around them, they will eventually form a clonal “grove” of plums for you!

One of the hardiest Asian persimmons. Large fruits are firm and crunchy when ripe, and seedless. Early ripening. Great edible landscaping choice – care-free dwarf trees have glossy green leaves, good fall color, and the fruit will hang on the branches after leaf fall for a stunning specimen tree. This American/Asian 2nd generation hybrid (non-GMO) is reportedly a back-cross between ‘Rosseyanka’ above and the Kaki Asian persimmons. It boasts 2 1/2″ sweet, flavorful fruits that are soft when ripe. It gets its size and taste from its Asian persimmon parents, but it is as cold hardy as an American persimmon. Suitable for edible landscaping with it’s glossy leaves and attractive fall color. Reaches just 12′ tall. Commonly sold under a trademarked name which you can probably guess. Self-fertile. Zones 5-8

This is the European hazel that you recognize from store-bought hazelnuts. Shrubby growth gets 8-12’ tall with 6-8′ spread. Fall foliage is stunning with colors all over the spectrum. Showy male catkins in the winter and spring. Parent is resistant Eastern Filbert Blight so seedlings should have good resistance but not guaranteed. Plant two, ideally three or more for pollination. Can take half-day to full sun. Space 4-8’ apart.

(Castanea mollisima) -Full to Part Sun– Spreading growth, height 30-50′, plant two for pollination
Seedlings from improved varieties. These beautiful spreading trees produce loads of large nuts at a younger age than most nut trees. Leaves glossy green. Beware the husks which are incredibly spiny (like a sea urchin), use gloves to get out any nuts that don’t drop free. But slice a cross in the hull, roast over a fire, peel and dip in melted butter—you’ll have a treat that will warm you up quick on cool fall/winter evenings! Unique for their starchiness amongst nuts—a tree-based carbohydrate source. Immune to chestnut blight. Prefers acidic soils—never put lime around a chestnut tree! Plant two for pollination. Full to part sun; Zone 4-8. Height 30-50’

Russian seed source that should have better productivity over the more common Polish seed source. These are seedlings that have good cold hardiness. While not quite as large as grafted varieties, they come pretty close and are easy to grow. More upright growth than heartnut with beautiful smooth white bark! Can sometimes have pest issues on the nuts but often have plenty of unharmed nuts to supply your winter pantry. Full to part sun; Zone 4-8. Height 30-40’

Commonly known as a lovely landscape tree. Grafted males are what you typically see planted for ornamental purposes, but the females actually have a tasty and nutritious nut. The reason landscapers only plant the males is that the female’s seed has an outer covering (the “fruit”) that smells terrible and is a skin irritant. But when cleaned and roasted the seeds are easy to crack and taste great. You need a male to pollinate the female trees if you want nuts.
