Viola’s Lavender Mulberry

-Full Sun to Part Shade–  Full size on seedling rootstock, space 15′-25′ apart, self fertile

This tree claims its parentage from Southern Indiana wild-growing mulberries.  The earliest fruiting of the trees we have producing right now.  Great producer of sweet but flavorful dark lavender fruit.  Juice is less-staining than black fruited mulberries, but not completely clear.  Has a more berry-like flavor than your typical non-staining white or lavender fruit (which tend to be very sweet but bland) – almost as flavorful as black mulberry fruits.  Short but fat berries.  Non-grafted, it roots very easily from cuttings.  Self fertile.

Ichi Ki Kei Jiro Asian Persimmon

(Diospyrus kaki) -Full Sun to Part Sun–  Dwarf on Seedling Rootstock, 8′ tall by 10′ wide, self-fertile

One of the hardiest Asian persimmons.  Large fruits are firm and crunchy when ripe, and seedless.  Early ripening.  Great edible landscaping choice – care-free dwarf trees have glossy green leaves, good fall color, and the fruit will hang on the branches after leaf fall for a stunning specimen tree.  Reaches just 8′ tall, spreading up to 10′ wide.  Self fertile.  Zones 6-10  very limited supply

Nikitskaya Bordovaya Persimmon

(Diospyros virginiana x Diospyrus kaki) -Full Sun to Part Sun–  Dwarf on Seedling Rootstock, Up to 12′ tall, self-fertile

This American/Asian 2nd generation hybrid (non-GMO) is reportedly a back-cross between ‘Rosseyanka’ above and the Kaki Asian persimmons.  It boasts 2 1/2″ sweet, flavorful fruits that are soft when ripe.  It gets its size and taste from its Asian persimmon parents, but it is as cold hardy as an American persimmon.  Suitable for edible landscaping with it’s glossy leaves and attractive fall color.  Reaches just 12′ tall.  Commonly sold under a trademarked name which you can probably guess.  Self-fertile. Zones 5-8
