Misc. grafted Pawpaw

We sporadically carry too many different varieties of papaw for me to keep up with them all. They also sell out quickly. Right now, for example, we have about 10 gallon size grafted trees, but I don’t have an exact inventory count of which varieties. Newly grafted trees of all varieties listed plus some others will be available in late May.

Prok American Persimmon

(Diospyros virginiana) -Full Sun to Part Sun–  Full size on Seedling Rootstock, 35-60′ tall

One of the largest American persimmons with 2 1/2 to 3″ fruits, and rated best tasting by many fruit enthusiasts.  Early ripening.  If it is planted without a pollinator the fruits are nearly seedless, but in this area of the country, unless you live in the city you likely have male persimmons close enough to pollinate. 35-60′ tall. Zones 5-9

Geneva Long American Persimmon

 -Full Sun to Part Sun–  Full size on Seedling Rootstock, 35-60′ tall

Sources disagree whether this is a pure American Persimmon or possibly an American/Asian cross, but its form is completely American.  It bears large, less-astringent fruit that has a unique elongated shape – about the size and shape of an egg.  Good texture, more firm when ripe than wild persimmons. 35-60′ tall. Zones 3-9

wild Plum

(Prunus Americana) -Full Sun–  Full size on own roots (not grafted), plant two for pollination. disease resistant

These seedling trees are extremely disease-resistant and set bumper crops of golf-ball sized fruit every two years.  In between years get a smaller crop.  The fruit is red-skinned and yellow fleshed and glows when the sunlight hits it!  It is delicious eaten straight off the tree with a slight astringency that comes through delightfully in wine made from these fruits.  The roots will sucker so if you do not mow around them, they will eventually form a clonal “grove” of plums for you!

Jewel Black Raspberry

(Rubus occidentalus) -Full Sun to Part Shade–  sweet wild flavor, huge berries, early season

Early season.   A time-tested variety which still holds the main spot in nursery catalogs, and for good reason.   Black glossy berries about twice the size of wild black raspberries, twice the yield, and strong, anthracnose-resistant canes.   Definitely needs trellising or you will wind up with tip-rooted plants everywhere!   Has all the flavor of wild black raspberries—simply delectable!   Canes can grow over 10’ long; best to tip at 5′.   Space 2.5’ apart in row.  Needs well drained soil or a raised bed. Self fertile.

Niwot Black Raspberry

(Rubus occidentalus) -Full Sun to Part Shade–  mild flavor, huge berries, everbearing, vigorous grower

Produces a crop on last year’s canes at the same time as ‘Jewel’, and then another crop late summer on its current spring growth (like the everbearing or fall bearing red raspberries). Vines are very vigorous and productive, but the flavor is milder (read: less flavorful) than most black raspberries.
