Perhaps the single most useful tree for our area, the mulberry has copious amounts of delicious and nutritious (high protein, carbs, vitamins/minerals) fruit; is very fast-growing for quick shade and mulch production; leaves and stems are relished by most grazing livestock; and the wood is rot-resistant for fenceposts, etc.  They are used in the silk industry to feed silkworms. Even on seedlings, fruits are borne over the course of weeks rather than ripening all at once like most tree fruits.  Mulberries are delicious – they taste similar to raspberries, but with no noticeable seeds and no thorns.  The only disadvantages are the staining quality of the dark fruits; need a ladder to harvest prime berries (except for ‘Gerardi’ dwarf!); and without pruning the trees can get messy-looking, holding onto dead branches and twigs.  Mulberries can take some shade without suffering from lower production of berries.  Height to 35’.  Zones 5-9. Grafted trees on seedling rootstock.

Branches grow horizontally and twist and curl.  Fast growing shade tree to 30′ but can be coppiced/pollarded to keep smaller.  If grown into treeform, it takes on a “weeping willow” appearance.  Branches are great for dry or fresh flower arrangements and add lumpy bumpy interest to basketry projects.

Seedless Che (Chinese Melon Berry)

(Cudrania tricuspidata) -Full Sun to Part Shade–  semi-dwarf on Osage Orange Rootstock, space 14′ apart, self fertile

Grafted. Che is also known as Chinese Melon Berry, and tastes like a cross between a fig and a watermelon.  The variety we carry is seedless and completely self-fertile.  If planted near a male Che it will have hard seeds.  Strikingly different and beautiful small trees with attractive clean foliage.  They turn extra eye-catching when loaded with ripe pink-red fruits in the fall.  Fruits are about 1″ diameter, good chewy texture, keep well on the tree.  Fruits resemble a small hedge apple (osage orange), which they are related to.  Somewhat slow growing up to 15′ tall.  Grafted on osage orange rootstock.  zones 6-9

Yellow Groove Bamboo

(Phyllostachys aureosulcata) -Full Sun to part shade–  Tall, running, edible shoots, up to 2″ diameter

An attractive green bamboo with a yellow groove. A small percentage of canes display a unique zig zag growth pattern. In optimal conditions it can reach a height of up to 35 ft, with a culm diameter of 2.25 inches diameter. Our grove (in poor soil but with ample moisture) maintained about a 1″ diameter for the first 8 years, and now at 14 years we have a few canes approaching 2″ diameter. “Running” bamboo is invasive. Plant in an area that you can mow at least a 6′ wide path around, bury 2′ deep dividers to block runners, or just plan on keeping shoots snapped off on a regular basis where you don’t want it to spread. Tender new shoots are edible, and easy to pick.

All of our European pear varieties are said to be resistant to fireblight, though in Spring 2012 it plagued nearly all of our pears, even the supposedly resistant ones. Our Asian pears actually had less fireblight than the European ones. Pears are one of the easiest tree fruits to grow under organic conditions. Many insect pests which affect apples cannot propagate themselves in the very dense pear fruitlets—their larvae are actually crushed as the pear grows. Thus you may end up with some feeding scars and grit cells but have a perfectly fine fruit otherwise.  They do well in clay soils and can usually take wet soils better than apples or stonefruits.  Pears can take a little while to get established and get growing, and also are later in bearing their first fruit (4-6 yrs) than other fruit trees. All pears grafted on semi-dwarf Old Home x Farmingdale 333 rootstock, which can be maintained at 14’ tall. Space pears 14-16’ apart. gallon pot* $16 +tax
