Nikitskaya Bordovaya Persimmon

(Diospyros virginiana x Diospyrus kaki) -Full Sun to Part Sun–  Dwarf on Seedling Rootstock, Up to 12′ tall, self-fertile

This American/Asian 2nd generation hybrid (non-GMO) is reportedly a back-cross between ‘Rosseyanka’ above and the Kaki Asian persimmons.  It boasts 2 1/2″ sweet, flavorful fruits that are soft when ripe.  It gets its size and taste from its Asian persimmon parents, but it is as cold hardy as an American persimmon.  Suitable for edible landscaping with it’s glossy leaves and attractive fall color.  Reaches just 12′ tall.  Commonly sold under a trademarked name which you can probably guess.  Self-fertile. wild Plum

(Prunus Americana) -Full Sun–  Full size on own roots (not grafted), plant two for pollination. disease resistant

These seedling trees are extremely disease-resistant and set bumper crops of golf-ball sized fruit every two years.  In between years get a smaller crop.  The fruit is red-skinned and yellow fleshed and glows when the sunlight hits it!  It is delicious eaten straight off the tree with a slight astringency that comes through delightfully in wine made from these fruits.  The roots will sucker so if you do not mow around them, they will eventually form a clonal “grove” of plums for you!

Flying Dragon Hardy Citrus (trifoliate orange)

(Poncirus trifoliata) -Full Sun to Part Shade–  produces golf ball sized fuzzy lime-like fruits. self fertile, zone 6, grows up to 6′ high

A delightful little hardy citrus that is still highly underutilized and underappreciated.   Technically only hardy to Zone 6, but seems to be fine in Zone 5 and maybe colder as well.   This is the ‘Flying Dragon’ type, reaching only 6’ high with fancy twisted stems and decorative curved thorns.   Leaves drop in winter but stems stay dark green and look great in a little snow!   Produces abundant crops of great-smelling golfball-sized fruit that is very seedy but juicy and can be used to make very fragrant lemonade or marmalade.  This could make a really neat living fence for livestock.  Self-fertile.  Full to part sun.

Sam Sweet Cherry

-Full Sun to Part Shade–  Semi-Dwarf on Krymsk 5, space 12′-16′ apart, needs pollinator

Early season (early July).   Very dark, almost black fruit with a deeper flavor than other sweet cherries.   Blooms late.   Resistant to cracking and bacterial canker.   Zone 5-9

Gallon* pots $24, 2-gallon* pots $36, 4-gallon* pots $48

While sweet cherries are savored by everyone for their meaty, rich and juicy flesh, they are more difficult to grow without synthetic sprays than sour cherries. The fruit is prone to brown rot, often starting on split fruits. Insect pests (and birds) are also drawn to the fruitlets. Sweet cherries in southern IN sometimes miss a crop from blooming too early and having the blossoms killed by heavy frost. Still, they are somewhat easier than apples and plums, similar in ease of growing to peaches. We have sought varieties and rootstocks that will give you the best chance of success in our region. Grafted on Krymsk 5 which is a vigorous, early bearing, semi-dwarfing rootstock for cherries. It performs incredibly well in poor, heavy clay soils and can be kept at 12-15’ for easier picking! Space sweet cherries 15’ apart. gallon pot* $16 +tax

Viola’s Lavender Mulberry

-Full Sun to Part Shade–  Full size on seedling rootstock, space 15′-25′ apart, self fertile

This tree claims its parentage from Southern Indiana wild-growing mulberries.  The earliest fruiting of the trees we have producing right now.  Great producer of sweet but flavorful dark lavender fruit.  Juice is less-staining than black fruited mulberries, but not completely clear.  Has a more berry-like flavor than your typical non-staining white or lavender fruit (which tend to be very sweet but bland) – almost as flavorful as black mulberry fruits.  Short but fat berries.  Non-grafted, it roots very easily from cuttings.  Self fertile.
